At CKL Engineers, we’re proud that our infrastructure projects enhance connections, safety, and economic opportunity for the communities we serve. Today, we'll share highlights from three of our most transformative initiatives:
Mile Long Bridge

This $500 million rebuild of the Tri-State Tollway (I-294)'s Mile Long Bridge in Willow Springs, IL stretched over two major railroads, multiple waterways, local roads, and a major distribution hub for regional freight traffic. The new twin spans, completed in 2023, support 150,000 vehicles daily. The new bridge also features improved drainage and stormwater management, boosting reliability and reducing flood risk. Throughout this multi-year effort, we provided Construction Engineering & Inspection (CEI) services to the Illinois Tollway in their efforts to complete the project.
Lake Shore Drive Extension (U.S. 41 South)

Our work extended Lake Shore Drive past the former South Works site to support transit, bike, and pedestrian access. A decade later, this extension facilitated access to the 8080 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive master plan, anchored by the Illinois Quantum & Microelectronics Park. This development will revitalize the South Chicago lakefront and provide thousands of local jobs during and after construction, while reaffirming Chicago's place as the Midwest's economic engine.
95th/Dan Ryan Red Line Terminal (CTA)

Serving over 20,000 daily users and 1,000+ bus trips each weekday, the 95th/Dan Ryan terminal is the busiest on Chicago’s Red Line. 95th/Dan Ryan is located on Chicago's Far South Side, and its bus terminal allows dozens of disadvantaged communities quick access to the Chicago Loop. Beginning in 2014, CKL supported the construction of two new, fully accessible North and South terminals, improved platforms, bus transfer zones, safety features, and public art installations, all while ensuring that the busy terminal remained open during construction. The upgraded terminal, which opened in 2019, dramatically enhances travel for South Side residents, shortening commutes and ensuring transit equity.
Why It Matters
- Boosting Mobility & Equity: From tollways to transit, our work ensures reliable, safe travel for commuters, freight, and underserved communities.
- Sparking Growth: Infrastructure improvements like transit hubs and roadway expansions drive economic revitalization and support major redevelopment efforts.
- Strengthening Resilience: Flood control, durable materials, and accessible design contribute to long-term project sustainability and safety.
